MUSIC AT FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH
Vacancy: Organist and Director
of Music at the First Baptist Church of Boston, Massachusetts
The First Baptist Church of Boston is looking for its next Organist and Director
of Music. This is a part-time position ($12,000 per year package, with 4 Sundays
off per year) which requires playing the organ at our Sunday 11:00AM service.
Rehearsal with the choir (over half of whom are paid professionals) traditionally
has been Sunday mornings at 9:30AM, although this is negotiable. Additional
services at which the Organist would be expected to play include a Christmas
Eve service, Maundy Thursday, occasional events that we host, and short selections
during our Quarterly meetings. Playing at weddings and memorial services would
provide additional income, as would other initiatives that you might develop
in agreement with the Trustees of FBC-Boston. The Organist/Director would be
expected to attend meetings of the Music Committee and Quarterly business meetings,
and to have regular meetings with the Senior Pastor, who is the supervisor for
the Organist/Director. One of the joys of this position is getting to play on
a grand 1871 Hook and Hastings organ, and the ability to put together a music
program at the church with your own unique stamp in dialogue with the Senior
Pastor and the Board of Trustees. There is parking available at the church,
and we are easily accessible from the Copley stop of the Green Line on the T.
All applications, which should include a cover letter and cv/resume should be
sent via email to the Senior Pastor, The Rev. Dr. Stephen Butler Murray at revdrmurray@yahoo.com.
If you do not have access to email, you may send your applications to him at
The First Baptist Church of Boston, 110 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA 02116.
It is expected that finalists will be invited to serve as a guest organist and
to interview with the search committee following the worship service on an upcoming
Sunday in October or November. Our hope is to have a new Organist and Director
of Music in place for the Advent season of 2010, although the start date is
negotiable.
From the Chairman:
The choir rehearses on Sunday mornings at 9:00 AM and is a vital part of the worship service at 11:00 AM. The choir sings many styles and eras of music from ancient to modern, contemporary, Gospel, classical, hymns and anthems. The choir season goes from September to May. Soloists sing at the worship service during the summer months from June through August. The choir welcomes students as well as singers from the community.
